Star Trek

Slogging Through The UFOs.

One thing I'm really terrible at is finishing projects. Well, that's not entirely true. If I have an actual deadline (i.e., baby shower) or if someone is paying me, it's far easier to finish things. But if it's just stuff I'm doing for myself... eh. So projects drag on for years sometimes. Thus, even though I bought a shitton of yarn on sale (and got a bunch more plus an A.C. Moore gift card for my birthday last month), I have declared a moratorium on starting new projects until I've managed to finish the ones cluttering up my closet. My one and only closet, which also contains my clothes, winter blankets, old stuffed animals, and financial documents. Yeah.

This is the first project I've finished since the moratorium, an afghan crochet "fabric" with cross-stitched James T. Kirk! I got the cross-stitch pattern from black lupin at deviant art (look for the link to her second group of stitchies, too). The result (which still needs to be blocked into squareness and not-curly-ness):

Star Trek Fan Film, Anyone?

| tagged:

My latest thing is Star Trek fan films. A while ago I read an article in my then-local paper about a woman involved in Phase II, which is the one that has actual sets in a warehouse somewhere in Albany, and which is endorsed by the Roddenberry family. And had D.C. Fontana write for them. Never mind all the guest stars. Yikes. And I totally am holding on to my dream of someday dragging my ass up for their filming week and helping out... hey, I know how to use a hammer. And a sewing needle, although let me tell you, I am way more accurate with a hammer.

Anyway, I've lately blasted my way through Hidden Frontier and now I'm working on the Helena Chronicles (a spinoff of HF). But I really, really, really want to make my own now. One big huge problem... no money. Another huge problem... no friends who are into Star Trek. Well, that's not true. I have two friends in Florida who are Trek fans. But Florida does not help me whilst I am stuck up here in the hinterlands.

I do intend to move to Florida eventually, probably by climbing into my parents' moving van when they decide to retire/leave the snow behind. But in the meantime, I'm trying to think of immediate solutions. And ones that don't require me to make new friends, because really, I just don't have the wherewithal to do that. That's why I blog, instead of going out and having a life.

Temptation.

I've been busy getting my ducks in a row lately (the primary ducks being my work/money situation) so I haven't had a lot of time to think about anything else. Hopefully that will change soon. I actually had the wherewithal to come up with a rather insane recipe last night, although I haven't tried making it yet.

Star Trek: My Review.

| tagged:

So last night, the girlfriend and I went to see the new Star Trek movie. I am one of those people who intentionally and gladly reads reviews and spoilers before a movie... and I also will give a lot of spoilers in my review, so if you're a fanboy with swine flu and haven't been able to get out to see it yet, don't click on the "read more" thing below here.

Justifying Apple Jacks.

So I went to Walmart today (I hate it, but I needed shave gel and it's cheaper than any pharmacy) and picked up some odds and ends I needed... mustard, Fudgsicles... that kind of thing. And as I was speed-walking to the front so I could pay and get the hell out of Redneck Heaven, a display of sugary breakfast cereals caught my eye. Particularly, Apple Jacks.

Free prize inside... Star Trek "beam up badge", which I know better as a communicator badge. Although, maybe in the new movie they are only for beaming up. I have no idea. Anyway, I want one. Flipped the box over -- "Collect all 5!" Three Starfleet ones -- command, science, engineering. Ooh. And Klingon, okay. And fucking Romulan. I fucking love Romulans.

(Aside: My Romulan fanfic has a new home, http://trek.mouthybitch.com. Check it out.)
